Sanyo Epson announced high-res LCDs featuring Photo Fine Vistarich technology. The technology enables displays to produce beautiful images when viewed from any angle. Combined with the Photo Fine Chromarich wide color gamut technology, these LCDs can produce images that can be seen clearly from 180 degrees in all directions, without changes in color.

The World Wide Web Consortium last week published a first public working draft of Device Independent Authoring Language, which is aimed at making it easy to present content on a wide variety of mobile devices. While it’s already possible to tailor Web pages to mobile devices using CSS (Cascading Style Sheet), there’s no way of taking account of the differing capabilities of different handhelds, such as screen size, color or resolution. DIAL allows people to specify different layouts for various devices. The draft standard is part of the W3C’s Mobile Web Initiative, an effort to make the Web as accessible on the move as it is at people’s desks.

A new instant messaging worm installs a rogue Web browser called “Safety Browser” and hijacks the user’s Internet Explorer home page, experts have warned. The worm, dubbed “yhoo32.explr” by FaceTime Security Labs, was found two weeks ago on the Yahoo instant messaging network and was still active as of Friday. The worm drops the “Safety Browser” on the target’s machine. The rogue browser uses the same icon as Microsoft’s IE Web browser and, when opened, takes users to a site that installs spyware on the PC, FaceTime said. “This is the first recorded incidence of malware installing its own Web browser on a PC,” the company said in a statement.

MobiMate announced its co-operation with Amobee Inc. to create a free version of WorldMate, incorporating mobile advertising provided by Amobee Media System technology. WorldMate Free Edition was demonstrated at the Mobile Application Summit, hosted by Nokia. It will initially support Nokia S60 devices and will be distributed online, for free, to millions of S60-based Nokia device users. WorldMate Free Edition will include a bundle of travel services including world clocks, weather forecasts, currency exchange rates and more. The application will include advertising in the form of “interstitials” shown during idle-time, for instance when the application is first loaded or when data updates occur. These ads will also enable users to respond immediately to advertisers’ messages, for instance by browsing to an advertiser’s WAP-site or by placing a call to its service line. Advertisements are served on-line using Amobee Media System technology and are rotated over time, just like banners or interstitials in a Web site.

Pacific Design announced the retail availability of its PSP case for use with the popular Sony hand-held gaming device. Pacific Design, known for its attention to detail and usability, will ship the PSP case to U.S. retailers including Circuit City beginning May 30, 2006. Verizon Wireless will become the first company to sell Motorola’s slim Q, a phone with a miniature keyboard, the companies said Monday. The Moto Q phone, which runs on Microsoft software and will go on sale May 31, will compete with Research In Motion’s BlackBerry wireless email device. The Q is a high-end phone, something of a cross between a BlackBerry and a video iPod, that Motorola will try to pitch to corporations as well as consumers.

Thieves took sensitive personal information on 26.5 million U.S. veterans, including Social Security numbers and birth dates, after a Veterans Affairs employee improperly brought the material home, the government said Monday. The information involved mainly those veterans who served and have been discharged since 1975, said VA Secretary Jim Nicholson. Data of veterans discharged before 1975 who submitted claims to the agency may have been included. Nicholson said there was no evidence the thieves had used the data for identity theft, and an investigation was continuing.
