Nokia unveiled a new version of its Internet tablet device running Google Talk communications software. The deal between Finnish-based Nokia and Web search leader Google allows people to chat with other users of instant-messaging software via the Nokia Wi-Fi device, which relies on short-range wireless networks. The Nokia 770 Internet tablet, introduced last year, offers wireless access to digital music and video, as well as access to email.

Sony said it would offer the world’s first notebook PC equipped with a next-generation Blu-ray optical disk drive in Japan in June, a month behind Toshiba’s launch last week of laptop PCs with a rival drive. Sony also said it would unveil in June a handheld PC that uses NAND flash memory instead of a hard disk drive as its storage, in a potential boost to NAND flash makers such as Samsung Electronics and Toshiba.

At least five mobile phones have exploded over the last two months in Brazil, causing anxiety among phone users and making headlines. The incidents, representing only a fraction of the 89 million phones in circulation in Brazil, all involved Motorola phones. The company said it is investigating. Brazil’s telecommunication agency is pursuing the case as well.

Verizon Communications said Friday it does not and will not provide any government agency unfettered access to customer records. The telecommunications company said it could not comment on a “highly classified” National Security Agency program that President George W. Bush has referred to, nor could it confirm or deny whether it has had any relationship to the program.

Etisalat, the Middle East’s leading telecommunications service provider and Research In Motion announced the launch of BlackBerry to customers in the United Arab Emirates. Etisalat will be the first service provider to introduce the BlackBerry wireless platform in the Middle East Gulf region. Etisalat will initially offer the BlackBerry 8700g and the BlackBerry 7290 handsets. These devices provide an intuitive user experience with support for email, phone, text messaging, Internet, organizer and corporate data applications. These quad-band devices operate on Etisalat’s GSM/GPRS network and, with Etisalat’s more than 100 global roaming relationships, in more than 40 countries.
