Google has no plans to build its own Web browser software to compete with rival Microsoft, Chief Executive Eric Schmidt said on Wednesday. During a conference call with Wall Street analysts, Schmidt dismissed speculation that the company aimed to tie together its Web search and other services to compete with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.

In a radical departure from earlier statements, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has said that requiring Internet service providers to save records of their customers’ online activities is necessary in the fight against terrorism. Gonzales and FBI Director Robert Mueller privately met with representatives of AOL, Comcast, Google, Microsoft and Verizon last week and said that Internet providers–and perhaps search engines–must retain data for two years to aid in anti-terrorism prosecutions, according to multiple sources familiar with the discussion who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Chapura announced that it has updated its Outlook synchronization software, PocketMirror Professional for Microsoft Windows Mobile, to support the Smartphone edition of Windows Mobile 5, in addition to the Pocket PC and Pocket PC Phone Editions of Windows Mobile 5.0 that the previous version supported. The updated PocketMirror software supports the smartphones produced by manufacturers who use the default Windows Mobile Application Security Policy, such as the Moto Q smartphone from Motorola.
