An addiction center is opening Europe’s first detox clinic for game addicts, offering in-house treatment for people who can’t leave their joysticks alone. Video games may look innocent, but they can be as addictive as gambling or drugs–and just as hard to kick, says Keith Bakker, director of Amsterdam-based Smith & Jones Addiction Consultants. Bakker already has treated 20 video game addicts, aged 13 to 30, since January. Some show withdrawal symptoms, such as shaking and sweating, when they look at a computer. His detox program begins in July. It will run four to eight weeks, including discussions with therapists and efforts to build patients’ interests in alternative activities.

The Secretary of the Department of Veteran Affairs, R. James Nicholson, will announce a VA-wide recall of all laptop computers June 8 in a 10:00 a.m. hearing at the House of Representatives Government Reform Committee. According to Rick Weidman, executive director for Policy & Government Affairs, this recall will cover every laptop computer in the agency. Weidman said that in meetings he had with Nicholson Wednesday evening this recall was not mentioned to him or to others in the veterans’ community; however, he said that his office was notified this morning.

NTT DoCoMo and Research In Motion announced that DoCoMo will start marketing RIM’s BlackBerry handheld devices to its corporate customers in autumn 2006. DoCoMo will provide the devices to further meet corporate users’ needs for mobile business solutions. BlackBerry Enterprise Server software tightly integrates with Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus/Domino and Novell GroupWise, and enables secure, push-based wireless access to email and other corporate data. The BlackBerry handheld devices to be sold in Japan will operate on both W-CDMA and GSM/GPRS networks and will be useable around the world for voice and packet communications.
