Dell says it’s investigating an incident in which one of its laptops is said to have caught fire. The event, detailed in a report by the Inquirer.net, saw the Dell laptop produce smoke and then catch fire during a business conference in Japan. The Web publication is hosting several pictures of the event on its site. A spokesperson for Dell, in Round Rock, Texas, confirmed that the company is aware of the occurrence and that it involved a Dell notebook.

Security researchers have found a way to seize control of a laptop computer by manipulating buggy code in the system’s wireless device driver. The hack will be demonstrated at the upcoming Black Hat USA 2006 conference during a presentation by David Maynor, a research engineer with Internet Security Systems, and Jon Ellch, a student at the U.S. Naval postgraduate school in Monterey, Calif. Device driver hacking is technically challenging, but the field has become more appealing in recent years, thanks in part to new software tools that make it easier for less technically savvy hackers, known as script kiddies, to attack wireless cards, Maynor said in an interview.

The Federal Trade Commission, responsible for protecting Americans from fraud and identity theft, reported on Thursday the theft of two of its own computers with personal information on about 110 people. Hackers are trying to lure people to a malicious Web site using cell phone text messages, a security company has warned. The blended attack uses social engineering techniques in its attempt to trick people to the site, security vendor Websense said in an advisory. An SMS text message is sent to the targets’ cell phones, thanking them for subscribing to a fictitious dating service. The message states that they will be automatically charged a fee of $2.00 per day via their phone bill, unless their subscription is canceled online.

People should not use mobile phones outdoors during thunderstorms due to the risk of being struck by lightning, according to a group of doctors. Doctors at the Northwick Park Hospital in England wrote in a letter in Friday’s British Medical Journal about the case of a 15-year-old girl who was using her phone in a park when she was hit during a storm. Although she was revived, a year later she was still suffering “complex physical, cognitive, and emotional problems.” usually when someone is struck by lightning, the high resistance of the skin conducts the flash over the body in what is known as a flashover.
