WeatherBug, provider of live, local weather information services, together with Handango, announced a partnership to deliver WeatherBug Mobile services to users of the BlackBerry wireless solution from Research In Motion. WeatherBug Mobile features live, neighborhood level weather conditions, satellite and radar views and live camera views from the WeatherBug Network plus forecast updates and severe weather alerts from the National Weather Service.

A tiny telescope designed to be implanted in the eyes of some elderly patients should not receive Food and Drug Administration approval, an FDA panel recommended on a 10-3 vote. The agency’s ophthalmic devices panel recommended against the pea-sized bionic device for safety reasons, spokeswoman Heidi Valetkevitch said. The first-of-its-kind device is called the Implantable Miniature Telescope. The telephoto lens could enable some patients to do away with the special glasses and handheld telescopes they now use to compensate for the loss in central vision caused by disease, according to VisionCare Ophthalmic Technologies.

Hewlett-Packard Laboratories has squeezed a computer onto a sticker. Memory Spot, a technology devised by the research division of HP, is a self-contained storage device with a radio and processor that sticks to photos, documents or cards. About the same size as a shirt button but thinner, a Memory Spot can be stuck onto the corner of a family photo: Wave a reader over it, and the spot will serve a video or audio recording of the subject of the picture to a nearby computer or cell phone.

Two months after a joint announcement by Apple Computer and Nike, the Nike + iPod Sport Kit is now available in stores, along with a variety of compatible Nike+ (“Nike Plus”) shoes and clothes. Designed to work only with the iPod nano, the Sport Kit consists of a small red and white wireless 2.4 GHz sensor/transmitter, and an all-white iPod nano receiver, which together track and store data on a runner’s or walker’s performance for later synchronization with iTunes. In order for the kit to work as intended by Apple and Nike, the sensor must be inserted into a pocket within any Nike+-branded shoe.

The European Commission launched a plan to slash the cost of using mobile phones abroad, targeting what it sees as excessive prices and giving operators a last chance to regulate themselves. The Commission proposal aimed to cut the cost of using a mobile phone abroad by up to 70 percent, he said. Mobile phone companies will have a six-month grace period to introduce caps on retail tariffs for calls made abroad.

Cingular Wireless said that cable channel HBO has produced a special mobile mini-series based on the popular show “Entourage” that extends the story beyond what is shown on television. Cingular, and its rivals Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel, are all aiming to boost revenue with services such as video and music. Cingular said its mini “Entourage” series, with episodes that last 4 minutes each, will follow one story line based on “Entourage” character Johnny Drama and not distract from the regular series. The wireless company said it would also show full-length episodes from the first season of “Entourage” and from other popular shows such as “Sex and The City” and “Curb your Enthusiasm.”
