A small Florida company is taking on the Federal Communications Commission to change regulations prohibiting the sale of equipment used to scramble cell phone signals to local and state agencies. The company, CellAntenna, filed a lawsuit in the U.S. Court of Appeals in the 11th Circuit in Atlanta on November 22 challenging the Communications Act of 1934, which is enforced by the FCC. The 1934 act and the FCC regulations that go along with it prohibit the use of cellular and radio frequency-jamming equipment, except by federal agencies. CellAntenna argues that the Communications Act and the FCC regulations that interpret the law are unconstitutional because they are in conflict with the Homeland Security Act of 2002, adopted by Congress in the wake of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The Pantech Group, the second largest mobile phone company in South Korea, has agreed to use Nuance Communications’ RealSpeak Mobile SF to power its PG-6200, PG-8000 and PG-3700 mobile phones in multiple languages, including Russian, English and Mandarin. RealSpeak is a text-to-speech engine designed to accurately convert text into clear, synthesized speech, delivering high-quality readings of SMS and email messages. The products are already available in Russia and Taiwan.

The security model of that BlackBerry on your hip isn’t holding up very well to third-party scrutiny. According to a white paper by John O’Connor, a researcher on Symantec’s security response team, hackers can pay $100 for an API developer key that can open doors to the theft of data from Research in Motion’s BlackBerry devices. O’Connor’s paper was briefly posted–and quickly yanked–from a blog entry discussing the future of the BlackBerry device. It is not yet clear why Symantec pulled the paper but a quick peek at the findings suggests there might have been some external pressure involved.
