NTT DoCoMo, Japan’s top mobile phone operator, said on Thursday it would recall 1.3 million cellphone batteries made by Sanyo Electric because they may overheat and rupture. The recall comes as the latest blow to Sanyo, which warned last month that it would fall into the red for the third straight year in 2006/07 amid weak sales of digital cameras and mobile phones. Sanyo is the world’s largest maker of lithium-ion batteries.

The Wireless Communications Solutions Division of ARC Wireless Solutions is introducing the new Freedom Antenna designed to offer cellular phone users a stronger, more durable signal. The Freedom Antenna is a portable personal antenna with broadband capability that provides clearer reception for cell phones and other wireless devices by extending the range, company officials said. It offers high performance in a slim package for both fixed and mobile hands-free use in vehicles, offices, homes and is ideal for travel, officials said.

It is “almost certain” that Apple Computer will begin production of its long-anticipated iPhone in January, and the company will unveil improvements to its iTV and the iPod at the same time, according to one Wall Street analyst. In his latest research paper to clients, Gene Munster, a senior analyst with Piper Jaffray, wrote that these three new offerings from Apple will make their debut at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco on Jan. 9. Since September, the rumors and speculation that the Cupertino, Calif., company has started work on a cell phone that will debut in 2007 has grown. Munster wrote on Sept. 11 that Apple would produce an iPhone within four to six months.

Nintendo’s president acknowledged Thursday the just-launched Wii video-game machine may have a problem with a strap that secures its trademark wandlike remote-controller to the player’s wrist. “We are investigating,” Iwata said of reports about the Wii’s strap coming off as players swung around the controller, at times causing the remote to fly out of their hands. Players use the Wii remote like a tennis racket, sword and other devices to play games. The company has not decided on any specific measures to change the strap, Nintendo spokesman Yasuhiro Minagawa said.

As many of your know, for the past week we have been following the story of missing CNET Senior Editor James Kim and his family. Fortune smiled on his wife Kati and daughters Penelope and Sabine when they were found by searchers on Monday. James had left them Saturday morning on a quest for help. He was found deceased today.

We in the tech industry, particularly here at ZATZ, will miss James and mourn his passing. He was an intelligent and well-respected writer and tech guru. James made the ultimate sacrifice in his dedication to the safety and welfare of his family. We will miss our colleague and friend; our thoughts and condolences go out to Kati and the girls.
