Stung by product safety outcries, notebook manufacturers are showing signs of willingness to experiment with new types of batteries and suppliers. Lithium ion batteries have been the de facto standard for powering notebooks and consumer electronics gear for years. But recent battery-induced accidents and fires have prompted massive, multi-million-dollar recalls and tarnished the reputation of giants including Sony and Dell. One start-up looking to get its foot in the door is Boston-Power, which has designed what it says is a safer and potentially more efficient lithium ion battery. The company, says CEO and founder Christina Lampe-Onnerud, is on the verge of signing a deal with a large notebook maker–she won’t name it yet–that’s expected to come out with a portable PC using Boston-Power’s battery in mid-2007.

Record label Sony BMG will compensate customers in California whose computers were damaged by anti-piracy software on CDs sold by the firm. It settles a long-running lawsuit between Sony BMG and a number of US states about the nature of digital rights management software on CDs. Agreements with other states are expected to follow.

A heatproof battery for laptops, which could help solve recent problems with overheating, is to be mass produced by Japanese firm Matsushita. It follows a series of incidents where batteries overheated or caught fire. Matsushita has added a heat resistant layer to its lithium ion batteries and plans to step up mass production.

It’s very likely that when you call 911 from your cell phone in an emergency, the operator on the other end won’t automatically know your location. This is despite the fact that most U.S. mobile phone companies have met a Federal Communications Commission mandate to provide location information to 911 operators for millions of wireless subscribers. After years of work, the wireless phone industry is still a long way from full deployment of what is known as enhanced 911 service, or E911.

Cingular Wireless has made a deal with MySpace that will allow MySpace users to access their profiles through Cingular phones. Under the agreement, cell phone users will be able to go to their MySpace page to edit it, post photos and get messages. For example, a MySpace users could take a picture with their cell phones and then post the image to their Web page.

Electric Pocket’s Ringo Mobile application is now available for users of Windows Mobile Smartphone devices, such as the Cingular 2125, Motorola Q, T-Mobile Dash and the SPV C600 from Orange. Ringo has long been the best selling ringtone manager for Palm’s Treo smartphones, such as the Palm OS-based Treo 700p and the Windows Mobile-based Treo 700w, with features such as playing MP3 tunes as ringtones and assigning ringtones to individual callers or groups of callers. As well as using their own MP3 tracks, Ringo users can choose from 50 free MP3 ringtones, which they can download directly to their phone.
