Lenovo has released the ThinkPad W700 laptop aimed at photographers and designers, offering a built-in graphics tablet and color calibrator. What’s more, the display displays 72% of the possible color gamut of the Adobe RGB color space whereas most normal laptop displays can only show 45% (though new panel technologies becoming available allow up to 100% coverage).

This 17-inch widescreen mobile workstation is bundled with the new Nvidia Quadro FX 2700M and 3700M Open GL graphics processors with up to 1GB of video memory. It also features up to 8GB of high speed DDR3 memory, optional dual hard drives with RAID configurations, a 7-in-1 built-in card reader, a range of wireless connectivity options and multimedia capabilities including an optional Blu-ray DVD burner/player.

World-record-holder for human-powered distance and adventurer Greg Kolodziejzyk is on a quest for another endurance-event record–and the Trimble Nomad outdoor rugged handheld computer will be his virtual first mate. Kolodziejzyk will use a Nomad as a communications tool during his quest to set a new record for the farthest distance traveled on flat water in a human-powered craft. Trimble, a sponsor of the record attempt, will provide a free Nomad in conjunction with the event.

On an optimal-weather day during the week of August 29-September 2, Kolodziejzyk will set out in a specially designed, state-of-the-art, carbon fiber pedal-powered boat called Critical Power 2 (CP2), aiming to churn his way past the existing record. Carter Johnson paddled a surfski 242 kilometers (150 miles) on Lake Merced in California in 2006 to set the existing record. Kolodziejzyk hopes to prove that legs are slightly more efficient than arms over long distances on water.

During his record quest, Kolodziejzyk will be using the Nomad’s GPS capability to precisely track his progress, its wireless communication tools to maintain a live Internet map during the event, and its camera attachment to record and transmit images along the way. In support of Kolodziejzyk’s attempt to break the distance record, Trimble will provide a free Nomad to the person who guesses most closely the exact number of kilometers he can cover in 24 hours.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has confirmed the iPhone 3G has a kill switch that can remotely remove software from the devices. Jobs told The Wall Street Journal that Apple needs the capability in case it inadvertently allows a malicious program–such as an application that steals user’s personal data–to be distributed to iPhones through its App Store.

iPhone, iPhone, iPhone: that’s all Research In Motion heard throughout July as Apple’s media blitz over its first iPhone 3G mobile device dominated the news. But that was July, and RIM on Aug. 7 began firing up its own campaign to promote the BlackBerry Bold, the company’s first 3G phone, originally announced May 12.

With high hopes of grabbing a share of Apple’s booming retail market, RIM introduced the BlackBerry Bold in Germany and Austria with plans to hit the Indian market by midmonth. The Canadian and American versions of RIM’s new smartphone are expected within the next few weeks.

IBM has unveiled a sneak peek of its new Lotus iNotes, a Web app client for its Lotus Domino messaging server to bring email, calendar, and contacts to iPhone. The move fulfills rumors of customized iPhone support for Lotus Notes and demonstrates IBM’s evolving interest in Apple within the enterprise.

Planned for delivery later this year, Lotus iNotes is built upon IBM’s existing Lotus Domino Web Access infrastructure. The company’s Web site invites users to “bring the enterprise to your Apple iPhone” and says the software will deliver a “rich Apple iPhone user experience.”

For those of you wondering why the menus at the bottom of our pages haven’t worked for the past few days, well, uh, we broke them. When we did our mondo content management system upgrade, we knew something was going to break and that something was, apparently, menus. Oopie.

In any case, we’ve just finished upgrading our upgrade and the menus now work. Hopefully, that’ll be the biggest oops of the upgrade, but, hey, this is software. Let us know if you see any other glitches.

The good news about the upgrade, at least from our perspective, is the menu fix took under an hour to find and repair. That was actually the purpose of this major upgrade: to make maintenance easier and to make it possible to change our pages much more quickly. With the old system, fixing this would have probably taken about a week and would have, without a doubt, broken something else. With this new framework, the fix is isolated to its own object, so even if we did something wrong in the fix, it wouldn’t cascade to everything else.

So, clearly, at least from our own internal operations perspective, this first test is helping to prove the effectiveness of our new framework. Yay!
