PhatWare Phunkware

PhatWare has announced the formation of phunkware.com, a company division responsible for development of new software and adapting existing PhatWare software products such as PhatNotes and PhatPad for iPhone and iPod Touch devices. The first product of phunkware.com division is a Shaker game for Apple iPhone and iPod Touch. Shaker, a puzzle game for iPhone and iPod Touch, features three game-play options: Classic (tap buttons that appear on the screen below the playing field), Stirred (use simple finger gestures to manipulate game pieces), and Shaken (by shaking the iPhone, falling blocks can be manipulated by moving sideways and/or rotating). The goal for each version is to complete a row of objects without gaps. Each completed row disappears from the screen. As the game progresses, the blocks fall faster, and the game ends when the stack reaches the top. As a bonus, Top 10 scores will unlock one of 101 martini recipes stored in the program. The Shaker game is available now and can be purchased via Apple AppStore for $9.99.

New iPods, but no big surprises

The new Nano is taller and thinner, the new Touch is sleeker and cheaper, and Steve Jobs looked peppy, if still a bit thin. In other words, Apple’s “Let’s Rock” event went down pretty much as expected–and frankly, it was a bit of a letdown. Tech observers and analysts had warned that today’s iPod-focused Apple event might be something of dud, short of a breathtaking “One More Thing!”-type announcement. Well, this time, there was no big surprise at the end–unless you call a pair of acoustic songs by special guest Jack Johnson a big surprise.

Instead, we pretty much got what the rumor mongers said we would: A new, tall-and-thin Nano (similar to the first two Nano models), a cheaper and slightly-tweaked version of the Touch, and a new 120GB Classic. iTunes got updated–yes, with a new song recommendation feature, dubbed Genius–and a new iPhone firmware update (with a slew of fixes) is set to arrive.

New article: Gas misers just wanna have fun

Contributor Jorge Sosa says that while he appreciates the Prius as a sensible transportation appliance, it has absolutely none of the traits that made him fall in love with cars as a wee Gen-X toddler. Fortunately, it’s not too late to de-emasculate himself — and there’s hope for the rest of us as well. This is a smart article that’s also funny as all heck.
