Maker Faire Bay Area 2011

The Maker Faire combines creativity with the DIY community and serves it up in a two-day event. Now in its sixth year, Maker Faire Bay Area runs May 21-22 at the San Mateo County Event Center. This year’s theme is “From Maker Space to Outer Space”.

Sprint HTC Arrive

The HTC 7 Pro has launched as the HTC Arrive in the US. It runs WinPhone7 and includes a QWERTY keyboard that pulls out at the side. The downside, Microsoft apparently didn’t envision this style of keyboard. This review includes a 10-minute video showing how the phone works.

Opera unveils beta of Opera 11.10 web browser

Opera 11.10 beta is now available for download. This version offers several improvements, including a new browser core to speed performance, and support for CSS3’s multi-column layouts and gradients.

Notorious spamming botnet, Rustock, takes a fall

The RUstock botnet has been taken off-line. Why it isn’t working is something of a mystery but, for right now it’s quiet, and the flood of spam is slightly less.

U.S. military blocks websites to help Japan recovery efforts

The U.S. military has blocked access to 13 sites, including YouTube, ESPN, Amazon, eBay, and MTV, from military computers in order to free bandwidth for use in Japan recovery efforts. These sites were chosen because of their popularity, not because of content.

PhotoWorks Shuts Down April 4

Users of American Greetings free online photo storage site, PhotoWorks, will be given the option of moving their collections to Shutterfly. PhotoWorks will shut down on April 4 though users will have until May 2, 2011 to transfer photos to Shutterfly.
