The “it” holiday gift this year is definitely a handheld device. ZDNet’s Jesse Berst explains how buyers can avoid the hype surrounding handhelds.

According to INTELECT ASW, Windows CE devices accounted for 25% of handheld computer retail sales during the third quarter of 1998. 3Com’s PalmPilot remains the market leader with a 75% control of retail sales. The report also says that the handheld computer category experienced a surge in model offerings during 1998 with an increase from 44 models in January to 62 devices sold at retail by September.

Microsoft has teamed up with Legend, China’s largest computer maker, to market Chinese Palm PCs. According to AsiaWeek, Legend’s $420 model, due out this month, will also offer a full color screen, the technology having been developed while tailoring it to handle Chinese script.

InTime Solutions Inc. today announced capability to publish patrol schedules on a 3Com Palm Pilot. Schedules for individual officers or for a whole department are easily accessible on the Palm. If a Chief or shift supervisor wants to find out who’s on shift today or next week all he needs to do is click on his Palm and bring up the schedule. It’s great for officers too. A schedule for over a year can easily be stored as a single file on the Palm. When schedules change, the Palm is simply updated, via a desktop PC or over the Internet, using Palm’s HotSync cradle.
