Comdex wrap-up

The San Jose Mercury News has this wrap-up of Comdex ’99 in Las Vegas. Information appliances took over the show as Palm computing announced a major deal with Sony and Bill Gates touted Microsoft’s Web Companions, dedicated Internet devices that run on the scaled-down Windows CE operating system and MSN Internet service.

New Melissa strain

TechWeb is reporting that there’s a new strain of the Melissa virus, called Melissa.w, has hit three major banks in the United Kingdom and is spreading to businesses. TechWeb says that Melissa.w, is contagious because it replicates by emailing copies of itself to the first 50 addresses listed in the Outlook address book on any machine it infects. The virus then attempts to format the hard drives of infected computers on Dec. 25.

The Prudential Insurance Company of America announced it will provide wireless access to insurance, investments, real estate and retirement planning information to users of the Palm VII organizer. The new portal is accessible through the Prudential Web clipping application for the Palm VII.

Intellution announced iVisualize as its Windows CE visualization solution and newest member to the Intellution Dynamics family of software. Intellution also announced its partnership with Ann Arbor Technologies to provide a pre-installed hardware and software Windows CE solution in North and South America.

3Com’s manufacturing deal

3Com Corporation announced the sale of its manufacturing operations in Salt Lake City, Utah to Manufacturers’ Services. The agreement includes 3Com’s manufacturing operations and staff who produce Palm handheld computers, as well as 3Com’s mobile connectivity products. Manufacturers’ Services will retain all of 3Com’s 550 employees affiliated with the Salt Lake City manufacturing facility and continue to manufacture these products for 3Com. The transfer is expected to be effective on November 27, 1999.

Yodlee.com and Certicom announced that Yodlee.com has secured the Yodlee2Go Web Clipping Application for Palm VII wireless organizers with Certicom encryption technology. With the recent launch of Yodlee2Go, Yodlee.com and Certicom have given Palm users the access and security they need to manage highly personal information on their Palm organizers.

BrainDock.com announced that two new publishers of Palm computing based software have joined the BrainDock network. Technology Resource Group (TRG) and Synergy Solutions will make their software titles available for sale and download by BrainDock network electronic retailers.

New travel guides

ChoiceWay Media announced a new line of Windows CE travel guides for Europe. The guides feature interactive maps and detailed information on all aspects of visiting a foreign city. They are available now for London, Paris and Rome and will soon include Madrid and Barcelona, Munich and Berlin, and Vienna. Also included are historical notes, information on opening hours, ticketing, and numerous practical tips as well as a traveler’s dictionary.
