DataGet has released a new RS232 cartridge for the Visor. The Springboard module is designed to allow you to attach all kinds of equipment directly to your Visor. It has a DB9 plug just like the one on the back of your laptop. DataGet software 2.5 has a special wizard for configuring the port, and extracting data out of an ASCII stream.

Apple has introduced a new iMac that, well, sort of looks like a lamp, a lump, a work of art, or a cry for help. Those of you who might visit the Apple site and see the animation of the little lamp (er, computer) that could might notice a particular resemblance to the little white lamp that’s long been the iconic logo of Pixar, another Steve Jobs company. The thing is, I don’t know whether this is a new iMac to be loved or not. The Cube, now the Cube was beautiful and inspired pure technolust despite it’s overly high price and weird configuration. This new iBlob is, well, just strange.

TealPoint Software announced the release of TealLock version 4.00 for Palm OS handhelds. TealLock and Corporate TealLock is a secure automatic locking program that enhances Palm OS security with additional layers of protection. Features include serial and infrared lockout, data encryption, and numerous exclusive activation and customization options, including flexible timed activation, configurable locking screen, and graffiti shortcuts for locking the device and hiding private records. Customization features include automatic activation on power-off, timed activation, hardware button mapping, masked passwords, on-screen keypads, lock screen images, animated backgrounds, time and date display, and guest passwords.

Palm, Inc. announced Palm Reader Pro, the next generation of its ebook reader that puts a built-in Webster’s New World Dictionary at readers’ fingertips. Palm Reader Pro also enhances the user’s reading experience with a new collection of fonts from Agfa Monotype Corporation. Palm Reader Pro is available now from Palm Digital Media. To use the dictionary, the user simply holds the stylus on a word for a few seconds until the definition appears. Unlike some ebook readers with built-in dictionaries, Palm Reader Pro offers users the capability to look up definitions within definitions. In addition, Palm Reader Pro will intuitively find root words or related words if a definition is not found.

GeoDiscovery has created the Geode GPS Module for use with Palm OS based handheld computers. GeoDiscovery is now creating a Geographic Information System (GIS) for enterprise and organization usage. A GIS is a computerized system for the creation, collection, storage, and retrieval of geographic data. It includes in-field and in-office equipment. They are seeking information from those whose place of employment uses a GPS or GIS. SF Gate has an article speculating as to whether Apple may be on the brink of buying Palm. According to the article, a deal with Apple would lend Palm’s core hardware division a much-needed cash infusion, and it would turn management of the Palm OS over to a company that’s home to one of the best consumer-oriented operating systems in the world.
