Record labels and Microsoft are in discussions about ways that the next generation of the Windows operating system, code-named Longhorn, can support copy-protected CD technology. The music labels, in large part led by top executives at EMI Group and coordinated through their U.S. and international trade associations, are creating a “wish list” of CD rights protection features they want to see provided or supported by Longhorn.

Xybernaut has unveiled a flat-panel system intended to work both as a wireless outdoor display and a standalone wearable computer. The 1.9-pound system, the third in Xybernaut’s line of Atigo T dual-purpose computers, has an 8.4-inch touch screen with a resolution of 800 by 600 pixels. It comes with Wi-Fi support and uses a 1GHz processor from Transmeta.

A former help-desk worker at a New York company that provides credit reports to banks and other lenders pleaded guilty on Tuesday for his role in what federal prosecutors said was the largest identity theft case ever. Philip Cummings, 35, pleaded guilty to conspiracy, wire fraud and fraud in connection with the scheme that victimized more than 30,000 people.
