Fujifilm boosts memory card options

Fujifilm has announced the introduction of new media card ranges aimed at both the professional photographer and the consumer. The new Professional range will comprise faster speed and higher-capacity media for pro photographers, such as Ultra-Fast CompactFlash cards in 1 and 2GB capacities. Fujifilm will also offer a comprehensive selection of general-purpose media cards for the wider consumer audience.

Intel to enter flash memory market

In 2005, Intel will lay plans to conquer new territory. The Santa Clara, Calif.-based chipmaker will start to produce flash memory for consumer electronics devices, which typically sell for less than cellular flash, Intel’s historical strength. The company currently makes only NOR flash, which is highly reliable and used to store software code. NOR, however, is less dense than the NAND flash made by Samsung and Toshiba that’s used in cards to store data such as MP3 files and photos.

Notebook fuel cells

Though a number of companies have shown off fuel cells for cell phones and MP3 players, a company out of New Jersey says it has come up with one that can power a notebook. Millennium Cell is showing off a fuel cell at the Intel Developer Forum that it says can run a notebook for eight hours. The company’s goal is to produce fuel cells for notebook manufacturers by 2007.

Sandisk waterproof flash drive

SanDisk introduced the Waterproof USB Drive, a new line of rugged flash drives aimed at original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) targeting the health care market. Small enough to be worn all day as a necklace or kept on a key chain, the Waterproof USB Drive will be available to OEM customers in capacities of 64, 128, 256 and 512 megabytes and 1 gigabyte. The announcement was made at the annual Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) conference, where SanDisk was demonstrating products.

Sony Ericsson debuts Walkman phone

Swedish-Japanese mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson on Tuesday unveiled four new phones, including two with autofocus cameras and one with a Walkman-branded portable music player. With the Walkman phone, the company is using Sony’s 26-year-old Walkman brand to crack the mobile music market, a top growth area for 2005. The model will start selling early in the second half of 2005. It will have about 500MB of memory, good quality headphones and the ability to easily import tracks from a personal computer and other devices.

Sony promises 1 million PSPs

Shoppers will have 1 million PlayStation Portables to fight over when the handheld game player launches in North America March 24, the company confirmed Tuesday. Sony Computer Entertainment America said in a statement that it is boosting shipments to ensure that 1 million PSPs will be available for early bird shoppers. The company previously had been vague on launch quantities, saying a million units would be in production by the end of the month.
