MDaemon 8.0

Alt-N Technologies has launched MDaemon 8.0, an affordable Windows-based mail server with many powerful features for wireless email users. PDA/smartphone users without Microsoft’s Exchange Server are stuck using filters and such on their Palm OS email applications to sort out and eliminate spam and viruses from among legitimate email messages. MDaemon works with SnapperMail, VersaMail, Eudora, Mark/Space and Iambic Mail. Further, messages sent from a wireless handheld will show up in the Sent folder on both the Web email client and in Outlook on the desktop PC.

Hot Checkers for Palm OS

Intorine has released a new version of Hot Checkers for Palm OS with improved handheld compatibility. Hot Checkers includes four kinds of this classic board game: American Checkers, Pool, Russian Checkers and Giveaway. You can play against the computer or a human opponent. The two player game can be played via Bluetooth or infrared, or locally, using your handheld as a game board.

Trojan targets Symbian cell phones

Cell phone antivirus software company SimWorks reported Wednesday that 52 new Trojan horses are hidden inside several different cell phones games and other readily available mobile phone software. While the software appears to be safe to share or use, the Trojans actually contain malicious software that crashes many critical cell phone system components. The Trojan horses target only cell phones that use Symbian, an advanced, or “smart phone,” operating system that competes with similar software from Microsoft to bring PC-like capabilities to phones.

Apple patches iSync

Apple Computer has released a security update to fix a flaw in its iSync program, which helps Mac owners synchronize data between a Mac and a mobile device. According to Apple, the patch fixes a buffer overflow vulnerability within an iSync helper tool called “mRouter.”

Auction site for game artifacts

Sony plans to launch an online marketplace where fans of its multiplayer games can buy and sell virtual artifacts, a practice it previously discouraged. The Station Exchange site, announced Wednesday by Sony Online Entertainment, is apparently in response to the growing underground market for such items. Planned for launch in late June, the site will first offer subscribers to Sony’s “EverQuest II” the option to buy, sell or trade the right to use specific characters, items and online funds that they have earned playing the video game.

Diversinet, provider of mobile device security and authentication solutions for mobile data systems, has launched its MobiSecure suite of mobile tokens and MobiSecure Authentication Service Center designed to protect individuals, companies and enterprises from security threats such as identity theft, online fraud, and identity misrepresentation–better known as smorphing. MobiSecure Tokens eliminate the need for consumer and enterprise users to carry additional hard tokens, USB toggles or smart cards with smart card readers for two-factor authentication.

Sync Buddy 2.0.2 for Mac

Florent Pillet released an update to Sync Buddy, the software for active connections between Mac OS computers and Palm OS handhelds. With a full rewrite in Cocoa for Mac OS X only, Sync Buddy 2.0.2 offers a direct connection to Palm handhelds through USB, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. The new version brings several stability and compatibility fixes, like full support for palmOne’s Tungsten T5 and more.

Wireless service report cards

Verizon Wireless garnered the top ranking in Vocal Laboratories’ quarterly SectorPulse report measuring the quality of customer care among wireless operators. The most recent test was conducted between January and March 31 of this year. Verizon Wireless’ scores were the same as the previous ranking, while T-Mobile USA saw its caller satisfaction ranking fall from “A” in the previous quarter to “B” during the most recent report.

Sober worm is back

Virus writers have resurrected the Sober worm with a new variant that is spreading quickly over the Internet. Security experts said Tuesday that the worm, dubbed Sober.M, reports email addresses of victims back to its anonymous author–a technique known as harvesting. Spammers typically buy these fresh addresses to add to their lists of email recipients. The email containing the worm is written in bad English with the subject line: “I’ve got your email on my account.”
