Apple Computer released new software Tuesday designed to make it easier for users to listen to the increasingly popular, but largely unstructured podcast offerings. Apple, which also announced color screens for its iPod digital music players, said the new iTunes software comes with a podcast directory that lists more than 3,000 free audio programs. It also sports a new menu and the ability to automatically send new episodes of podcasts to the user’s computer.

Pocketland.de, the leading software site for Pocket PC and Windows Mobile Smartphones in Germany, has announced the release of its City Map Service in English at its new English site, pocketland.net. The PDA City Map Service, or “PDA Stadtplandienst” in German, provides users with quick-loading, high-resolution maps of hundreds of German cities. The extremely popular application has sold tens of thousands of copies in Germany and is now available for the first time in English.

SmartVideo Technologies announced that short form video series from Two Minute Television Network will be available to anyone with a smartphone or PDA equipped with a media player. The free, ad-supported entertainment channel will put series such as Genius on a Shoestring, the first two-minute reality series, Adventures in Speed Dating, and News with a Punchline–in the palm of their hand. SmartVideo offers technology that enables fluid motion, fully synched live video and audio broadcasts, even on phones running on current 2.5G cellular networks, making it the only such service able to be called television in the true sense.

Internet file-sharing services will be held responsible if they intend for their customers to use software primarily to swap songs and movies illegally, the Supreme Court ruled Monday, rejecting warnings that the lawsuits will stunt growth of cool tech gadgets such as the next iPod. The unanimous decision sends the case back to lower court, which had ruled in favor of file-sharing services Grokster and StreamCast Networks on the grounds that the companies couldn’t be sued. The justices said there was enough evidence of unlawful intent for the case to go to trial.

Advanced Micro Devices said Tuesday it filed an antitrust suit alleging that Intel has an unlawful monopoly in the microprocessor market, which it contends is used to coerce customers. AMD said in its suit filed in U.S. District Court in Delaware that Intel has pressured customers, including Dell and Sony, not to deal with AMD. In its statement, AMD said it identified 38 companies that have been victims of coercion by Intel. It said the companies include large-scale computer manufacturers, small system builders, wholesale distributors and retailers.

palmOne unveiled a new Web site dedicated to helping educators build a case for the adoption of handheld computers when applying for funding through the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA). The Web site gives educators a starting point with a guide to local sources for grants to fund technology purchases. Organized by state, sources include Community Foundations, local libraries that host Foundation Center Collections, and Regional Associations of Grantmakers. In addition, the Web site gives educators specific information on connecting handheld computers and solutions to the entitlements of NCLB and the specific curriculum and administrative goals of educators.

palmOne announced the expansion of its retail presence at the Boston Logan International Airport. The new store in Terminal B, which opened this week, is one of 10 locations in airports nationwide–and the third location at Logan–where dedicated palmOne stores serve busy travelers.
