A preliminary report released by the Department of Homeland Security seems to scatter cybersecurity responsibilities across the government and the private sector while sticking to generalities about future plans. In its 175-page draft of the National Infrastructure Protection Plan, or NIPP, the department outlines a broad framework for protecting the nation’s “critical infrastructure” and “key assets”–bureaucratic argot referring to everything from the power grid to dams to computer systems.

Danger’s T-Mobile Sidekick II handheld device is receiving an upgrade, but users may not be notified of the change before it’s about to install. Some owners of the Sidekick II, which combines a cell phone, camera, instant messaging, email and Web access, have reported seeing a version 2.3 file of the device’s proprietary operating system. Users aren’t notified when the 5MB file begins downloading, but they are informed when it’s ready to install.

Wireless technology company Qualcomm said it filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Nokia, less than two weeks after Nokia and five other companies complained about Qualcomm’s competitive practices to the European Commission. Qualcomm said it wanted Finland’s Nokia, the world’s No. 1 mobile phone maker, to stop selling certain mobile phone products in the United States, and demanded unspecified monetary damages from Nokia. The latest suit appeared to be a retaliation by Qualcomm for complaints to the European Commission, made on October 28 by Ericsson, Texas Instruments Inc., Broadcom Corp. and others. It could be the start of a a flurry of additional lawsuits from Qualcomm, analysts said.

Electronic paper is a display technology that makes possible flexible or even rollable displays which, unlike current computer screens, can be read in bright sunlight. But, much like when LCD displays came to the market, consumers are first likely to see the technology in clocks and watches. The popular example of an electronic newspaper that automatically updates itself wirelessly is still years away.

miniMusic has released an extensive upgrade to their BeatPad software to be included in the new Pro Music Suite. The Krikit Audio Engine has been added, bringing BeatPad up to date with the other professional applications from miniMusic. The new software bundle includes BeatPad, SoundPad, and NotePad. BeatPad is a pattern based music sequencer. Looping patterns can be edited while they play so the user can hear each change they make. Patterns can include both melodic and drum tracks, and can be chained together for up to 128 step loops. This new version also adds a new Library screen to store and organize multiple banks of patterns, and can now export patterns as standard MIDI files.
