A booby-trapped game of noughts and crosses has been used to show how a Blackberry can be hijacked to steal confidential data. Created by a security researcher the game contains malicious code that turns the popular mobile email device into a backdoor into corporate networks. Dubbed “blackjacking” the technique is thought to be the first to try to take advantage of the Blackberry. The creator of the hijack code intends to release it publicly in mid-August.

Lenovo Group is planning a full embrace for Linux. The PC maker will announce a plan to pre-load Novell’s SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 on one of its ThinkPad notebooks, sources familiar with the two company’s plans said. Lenovo, whose ThinkPads have long been a favorite of Linux users, will become the first PC manufacturer in recent history to allow individual customers to buy one of its notebooks, a ThinkPad T60p mobile workstation model, with the operating system pre-installed.

High-speed Internet access, streaming video, music downloads and other special new features may soon be in store for mobile phone owners thanks to an unprecedented airwaves auction. The auction, conducted by the Federal Communications Commission, has attracted 168 interested bidders, each hoping to offer the next generation of wireless services. The auction, which was beginning Wednesday, will add badly needed capacity to the maturing cellular telephone market and allow for clearer connections and sharper pictures in addition to a host of new services.

A survey into the habits of 142 UK office workers conducted by Finjan, the global provider of best-of-breed proactive Web security solutions, has uncovered that although they know the security risk to their employers caused by clicking on Web-links or opening attachments from unknown sources, they simply can’t help themselves. Of those questioned 93 per cent said that they knew that links, attachments, pop boxes and web pages could have spyware or other forms of malicious code embedded within them. However, 86 per cent admitted that they opened attachments and clicked on links without being sure if it was safe to do so.

Microsoft has decided not to move forward with a version of Virtual PC for the Intel-based Macintosh, and will also be discontinuing support of Visual Basic scripting in the next version of Office for Mac, the company said. As Virtual PC for Mac was originally developed on the PowerPC platform, the amount of time that it would take to bring it to Intel would be roughly equivalent to creating the product from scratch, Scott Erickson, director of product management and marketing for Microsoft’s Macintosh Business Unit, told eWEEK Aug. 7.

Businesses that use gateway security appliances to protect Research In Motion’s BlackBerry communications servers could be subject to attacks based on the planned release of exploit code by a high-profile malware researcher. According to a warning released by network security applications and device provider Secure Computing, organizations with their BlackBerry servers installed behind their gateway intrusion detection boxes could be compromised when researcher Jesse D’Aguanno, a consultant with risk management experts Praetorian Global, of Placerville, Calif., releases his code the week of Aug. 14. D’Aguanno first revealed his vulnerability exploit on Aug. 5 at the Defcon hacker convention in Las Vegas.
