Remote workers continue to expose their employers to a wide range of IT threats by using poor laptop etiquette and connecting to corporate systems using non-trusted wireless connections, according to a new report sponsored by Cisco Systems. In a study conducted by InsightExpress, researchers interviewed 1,000 remote workers in 10 countries and found that many people continue to use poor judgment in adhering to security policies, despite having been warned of threats lurking on the Web and wireless networks.

Google has agreed to purchase online video phenomenon YouTube for $1.65 billion in stock. The deal, which had been rumored for days, will dramatically improve Google’s video-sharing service with one of the Internet’s hottest properties in YouTube, which allows Net users to upload video clips and share them with the world.

Despite the recent recalls of millions of notebook battery packs, lithium-ion battery technology appears to be here to stay when it comes to powering portable PCs, experts say. Given that many tens of millions of battery packs shipped during the two-year time period covered by the recalls, most PC makers such as Dell and Hewlett-Packard insist that the technology is safe.

A laptop computer loaded with personal information on 2,400 residents of the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base has been lost, authorities said Friday. The computer was reported missing Tuesday by Lincoln B.P. Management Inc., which helps manage base housing. The company and Camp Pendleton are investigating. As of Friday, investigators had not found evidence that the data had been accessed, the base said in a statement.
