Online fraudsters are turning their attentions away from large banks and increasingly targeting wealthy consumers as phishing schemes continue to lure large numbers of people into unknowingly sharing their private information with criminals, reports Gartner. Americans are losing fewer dollars to online phishing schemes as a whole, but Internet-savvy, affluent PC users are being hit up for more money than ever, according to the latest Gartner research.

Digital cameras and digital music players are the hot high-tech gifts this holiday season according to a new survey by MyPoints, a leading frequent shopper loyalty Web site. The MyPoints Holiday Spending survey polled more than 1,000 active MyPoints members, approximately 35 percent of whom plan to purchase either a digital camera or a digital music player this holiday shopping season. In addition to digital cameras and music players, plasma TVs, DVDs and cell phones are the most popular consumer electronics gifts on the respondents’ holiday shopping list.

Motorola will buy enterprise mobile-computing software company Good Technology, the companies announced Friday. Motorola will maintain the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company’s customer and carrier relationships by continuing with its multi-device strategy, the companies said. Terms of the deal, expected to close in early 2007, were not disclosed.

If Cisco Systems has its way, the Oakland Athletics’ new ballpark in Fremont will be the stadium of the future. Fans will swipe electronic tickets stored on cell phones. Bleacher bums will view instant replays at their seats with laptop computers. And digital advertising displays will be able to switch images based on the buying habits of the people walking by through data embedded in their cell phones. That was the vision that A’s owner Lew Wolff laid out to Fremont City Council members this week in a pitch for Cisco Field, a planned ballpark featuring the company’s technology, Fremont Mayor Bob Wasserman said Thursday.

Yahoo is to begin delivering graphical ads to mobile phones as part of a test of how it can extend corporate brand marketing on the Web into the wireless market. The Internet media company said it will start an initial public evaluation later this week in the United States of slimmed-down banner ads and similar advertising to the small, but growing number of users of Yahoo’s Mobile Web service.

The Wi-Fi Alliance announced that Americans like their Wi-Fi more than they like Starbucks. The organization, reporting on a study it carried out with Kelton Research, uncovered a number of interesting facts about U.S. Wi-Fi users. For example, 89 percent of the 549 American Wi-Fi users surveyed said they would do without Starbucks rather than give up Wi-Fi.

Cingular Wireless will begin selling a new broadband PDA on Nov. 16, a company executive told eWEEK. The new HSDPA/UMTS enabled Cingular 8525 includes a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a wide screen, and it also supports quad-band EDGE, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. The device will sell for $399.00 with a two-year agreement. It supports tri-band HSDPA, so it should work anywhere in the world that the wireless broadband protocol is supported.

Seagate has announced a hard drive with integrated encryption capabilities named DriveTrust. At minimum, the drive can force the user to enter a password at boot time, before any software has been loaded off of it, in order to proceed. Additional support from Seagate and a software development kit for ISVs allow integration with biometrics and corporate authentication systems. Since the notebook drive market is the initial target for Seagate it would seem that biometrics are the obvious addition.

Palm announced that the Treo smartphone is featured as the technology star in the upcoming Twentieth Century Fox film “A Good Year,” starring Russell Crowe, directed by Ridley Scott. The Treo smartphone makes its presence known with its signature ring tone and unique messaging and multimedia capabilities that compelled filmmakers to choose it over a separate cell phone, laptop and digital camera. The film premieres nationwide on Nov. 10.
