Embracing a technology that has unnerved media and telecommunications companies, a major European wireless provider will let customers watch their home cable TV on a cell phone if they also have a device called the Slingbox back at the house. 3 Group will launch the new service in Britain first, starting December 1, followed by three more of its 11 markets in early 2007, the wireless company announced Thursday. Two new handsets running on 3’s next-generation wireless network will feature the Sling application, which customers can use to watch any channel available on their cable TV at home. The phones also can be used to control a digital video recorder at home, pausing and rewinding live television, playing previously recorded shows, or setting up the DVR to record a program.

ViewSonic, a company that specializes in visual display products for industries such as retail, health care and the military, launched Nov. 14 a new group of ruggedized handheld computers. Daniel Woodward, senior project manager at ViewSonic, said the company’s latest handheld computers–the V38r-06, V38r-07 and V38r-07a–“meet the demand for a PC that is rugged enough to use in the field for data collection and transmission as it is water- and dust-resistant, IP54-rated and can withstand a 4-foot drop to concrete.” The new line of ViewSonic’s handheld computers were built on Microsoft’s PPC 2003 operating system and Intel Xscale CPU and are designed to work with existing IT infrastructures and tender improved features for productivity such as Bluetooth and GPS tracking.

Circuit City will try to best Wal-Mart Stores and Staples in notebook pricing this holiday season with a Compaq notebook for $299 after rebates, or ##$99 with rebates and a 12-month subscription to Vonage,## according to bargain-hunting Web site Black Friday Ads. The site posts scans of Sunday newspaper inserts before they get delivered in papers. The deals can change, but history shows that the prices reflected in the ads become a reality. Steve Baker at NPD Techworld earlier this month predicted that $99 laptops, after all rebates and specials, would appear this holiday season.

People pining for the sleek PlayStation 3 gaming console might find shortages on eBay as well. The online marketplace is imposing restrictions on the PS3, which is expected to become one of the hottest holiday gifts when it hits stores Friday. Only established eBay vendors–those who have racked up comments from at least 50 previous customers and have positive ratings of at least 98 out of 100 points–can list PS3s before Friday. Each vendor can only list only one PS3 per eBay account. The listing must include a photo of the pre-order receipt, and the seller must guarantee shipment within 30 days from the date of purchase. Before Friday, PS3s can be listed on eBay only in auction formats–not as “buy it now” items.
