There are some great events on the way for legal professionals interested in the latest technology available in the field, with Palm, Inc. being one of the major players. It’s time to put in those travel requests in order to get in on the action.

.H1 LegalTech conferences 2001
From January 29-31, 2001, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP is sponsoring LegalTech in New York City. The LegalTech conference is dedicated to bringing you the latest technical tools to improve the efficiency and quality of your practice. PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP is presenting a three-track conference for large firms and law departments, with the ABA Law Practice Management Section presenting a track exclusively for small firms and solo practices. If you fall somewhere in between those two categories, you’re in luck because, new this year, The Legal Technology Institute will present a seminar track for mid-sized firms.

LegalTech New York is being held at the Hilton New York Hotel and Towers. Over 300 exhibitors are scheduled to attend in order to bring you the latest advances in technology, products, and services for the advancement of your legal practice. One of these exhibitors will, of course, be Palm, Inc.

I spoke with Erika Mobley, Market Development Manager at Palm, to find out more about what Palm has in store for LegalTech New York. I learned that Palm is co-sponsoring a booth with West Group (at http://www.westgroup.com) to showcase mobile wireless solutions for the legal community. West Group is the maker of Westlaw, a legal research service already entrenched in 85-90% of all prominent U.S. law firms and law schools. West Group has developed the Westlaw Wireless solution for the Palm VII and Palm VIIx or any other Palm device with Internet connectivity (e.g., a Palm III or Palm V with the Palm Mobile Internet Kit, a modem, etc.).

According to Mobley, not only will Palm and West Group showcase key vertical solutions for attorneys, law students, solo practitioners, paralegals, and the like, but they’ll also demonstrate key "horizontal" solutions useful for lawyers.

As an example of these horizontal solutions, she mentioned the Zagat Restaurant Guide for the Palm OS–which is ideal if you need to take clients out to dinner. You can find it at http://www.landware.com/zagat/index.html. She also mentioned Documents to Go, which could be useful if you want to take your legal research with you on your Palm device. That’s at http://www.dataviz.com/products/documentstogo/index.html.

Palm will also be showing off some cool peripherals for the Palm device, such as voice recorders for mass storage and stowaway keyboards, useful for note taking in depositions and meetings.

.H1 American Bar Association 2001 Midyear Meeting
With more than 400,000 members, the American Bar Association is the largest voluntary professional membership association in the world. The ABA provides law school accreditation, continuing legal education, information about the law, programs to assist lawyers and judges in their work, and initiatives to improve the legal system for the public.

The American Bar Association 2001 Midyear Meeting is to be held February 14-20 in San Diego at the Marriott Hotel & Marina. Erika Mobley will personally attend. With a background as a copyright attorney, she’ll be on hand to meet with other attendees and share Palm’s vision in the legal community. For more information on the event, visit http://www.abanet.org/midyear/2001/home.html.

.H1 ABA TECHSHOW
ABA TECHSHOW 2001 will be held March 15-17, 2001 in Chicago, Illinois. The three-day event will feature educational programs that are created for lawyers and other legal professionals by a group of veteran professionals. Influential members of the industry will be present to discuss how technology is affecting the legal profession today and how you can best prepare for tomorrow.

Palm naturally plans to be present at the ABA TECHSHOW in March, partnering in a booth with a company yet to be announced. Company representatives will be attending sessions as well as assisting track and session leaders with presentations. On Thursday, March 15, Erika Mobley will be on hand for the session entitled "PDAs as Marketing Tools," presented by Curlis Linder and Larry Bodine. She’ll also attend related sessions, including one on the morning of March 15 entitled, "How to Be a Mobile Lawyer: from Palms to Laptops to Wireless Everything."
