Embattled Internet telephone company Vonage settled its contentious patent dispute with Verizon Oct. 25, agreeing to pay as much as $120 million for infringing on Verizon’s patents. The terms of the resolution depend on how the Court of Appeals decides Vonage’s pending petition for rehearing regarding two of the Verizon patents.
If Vonage wins a rehearing on either of the two patents or if the injunction is vacated, Vonage will pay Verizon $80 million. If Vonage does not win rehearing on either of the patents, or if the stay is lifted reinstating the injunction, Vonage will pay $120 million, which includes $2.5 million payable to certain charities.

Given the option of contesting a traffic ticket, most motorists–19 out of 20 by some estimates–would rather pay up than pit their word against a police officer’s in court. A retired sheriff’s deputy nevertheless hopes to beat the long odds of the law by setting the performance of a police officer’s radar gun against the accuracy of the GPS tracking device he installed in his teenage stepson’s car.
The log he downloaded, using software provided by the GPS unit’s Colorado-based supplier, showed the teen was going the speed limit within 100 feet of where a Petaluma officer clocked him speeding.

Google is beginning to turn on IMAP access for users of its Web based Gmail email service. Using IMAP you can keep the same information synced across all devices so that whatever you do in one place shows up everywhere else you might access your email.
The service is free to users of Gmail and Google mail. The option can be found on the “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” tab in your Gmail “Settings.” Not all accounts have been activated yet, but Google says they are currently working to enable all users as fast as they can.

BusinessWeek’s “Technology & You” section has posted a new editorial entitled Palm’s Fading LifeLine. The editorial, written by Stephen H. Wildstrom, is quite a hard-hitting examination of the recent fumbles of Palm amidst increasingly fierce smartphone competition.
The piece claims that the recently launched Centro smartphone, despite generally positive reviews, is nothing more than a cut-down version of the Treo 755p. Wildstrom makes a particular point to note the size constraints of the Centro’s screen, battery, and keyboard. The article ultimately concludes that the recent lackluster efforts of the pioneering PDA company might be too little, too late, especially after being compounded by the resource drain brought about by the now-cancelled Foleo Mobile Companion.

Palm announced that its recapitalization plan with the private-equity firm Elevation Partners has closed, positioning Palm to lead the next phase of the smartphone and mobile-computing markets. Elevation has invested $325 million in Palm, and the company will utilize these proceeds along with existing cash and $400 million of new debt to finance a $9 per share cash distribution. Palm shareholders of record as of Oct. 24, 4 p.m. EDT, should receive the cash distribution within approximately 10 business days.
