T-Mobile buys SunCom

Expanding its U.S. turf, T-Mobile USA announced that it will buy SunCom Wireless Holdings for $2.4 billion in cash and assumed debt.

T-Mobile, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG, will make a cash payment of about $1.6 billion for SunCom, which operates wireless networks in the southeastern U.S. and Caribbean. The acquisition will improve T-Mobile’s network coverage in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, T-Mobile said in a news release.

Apple updates iPod software

Apple has released a software update that fixes bugs on some iPods. The iPod_26.1.0.1.ipsw update will be automatically downloaded and installed onto a compatible iPod when a user syncs their media player up with their computer. The update is downloaded in the background by iTunes, and is not available through Software Update of for direct download from Apple’s website.

The update is believed to have appeared specifically for the company’s latest iPod range, including the third-generation iPod nano, the iPod classic and iPod touch.

iPhone credit instructions

Apple has begun allowing people who bought iPhones before the higher-end model’s price was abruptly slashed to apply for a $100 store credit. The company said the credit would be available for people who bought either the $599 8GB, iPhone or the $499, 4GB model before August 22. People who bought the phones more recently are eligible for refunds.

Those early buyers must fill out a form on Apple’s Web site to have the retail or online store credit delivered to them electronically.

Free iPhone unlock hack

A hacker group released a free, open-source unlock for Apple’s iPhone, just a day after a commercial company started selling something similar for as much as US$99 through a network of online resellers.

The iPhone Dev Team, a dozen programmers who began their attempts to break the iPhone’s reliance on AT&T in early July, have posted their hack on download servers. According to several sites, including Gizmodo and Engadget, the iPhone Dev Team unlock exploits the same iPhone bug as the for-money iPhoneSIMFree hack to do its magic. The two groups, however, came up with their solutions independently.

Can Palm survive?

In an intriguing article published by the UK’s Guardian newspaper, Palm’s CEO, Ed Colligan, admits in an interview that “it will be 12 to 18 months” before a Palm smartphone running a Linux-based OS appears. This information, while slightly contradictory to earlier reports, is nevertheless a sign that all may not be well with Palm’s in-house OS developmental efforts.

The Guardian article, while offering little in the way of new information, does a solid job of providing a nutshell summary of the myriad of reasons leading to Palm’s current doldrums, such as the aging Garnet OS architecture, reduced revenue and consolidation in the PDA market, and the lack of differentiation amongst the Treo line in the face of increasingly fierce competition.
