Apple Tablet PC

Given that the iPhone already represents a groundbreaking merger of cell phone, iPod, and Web browser, would there really be a market for a new mini-tablet computer a little larger than an iPhone? Bigger than an iPhone but less capable than a full-fledged computer, an “iSlate” device would be in an awkward middle zone, said analyst Greg Sterling.

Could this be the return of the Newton? AppleInsider reports that Apple has been slowly but persistently working on a mini-tablet computer, a little larger than the iPhone, sporting Apple’s multitouch technology and an embedded version of OS X. The Apple rumor site claims that the product has been under development for the past 18 months. Although engineers had been pulled off the project to work on the iPhone, they have now returned full-force to developing a handheld computer.

Blogger leaks Office Mobile upgrade

A Microsoft employee on Thursday accidentally blogged about an upgrade to Office Mobile that shouldn’t be available for another couple of weeks. The upgrade, when it becomes available, should solve an incompatibility issue that left Windows Mobile 6.0 users unable to read Office 2007 file formats.

Jason Langridge, who works in Microsoft’s Windows Mobile group in the U.K., wrote that Office Mobile 6.1 was available and he included a link to the download page. But a representative with Microsoft’s external public relations firm said that the upgrade was put up on the site initially for internal testing and was accidentally made available to the public.

The new version of Office Mobile is expected to become available very soon, probably within the next two weeks, he said.
