WiMax for Nokia Internet tablet

Nokia plans to add WiMax connectivity to its N-series Internet tablet next year, the company said Wednesday. WiMax is a wide-area networking technology that offers faster download speeds than 3G (third-generation) mobile networks and has a wider range than Wi-Fi. Adding WiMax support to the Internet tablets will allow users to surf the Web or make calls using Skype away from Wi-Fi hotspots.

Nokia’s current Internet tablet, the N800, has a wide screen display with a resolution of 800 pixels by 480 pixels. The device comes with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0. The N800 does include support for cellular networks, although Bluetooth can be used to connect with a cellular phone.

1 in 3 kids online too much

A third of parents believe children spend too much time online, and mothers worry far more than fathers about whether certain Internet sites are appropriate for kids, according to a new survey.

Researchers for the nonprofit Common Sense Media and education foundation Cable in the Classroom also found that one in four parents worried that time spent online kept children from exercising or enjoying the outdoors.

Although four out of five parents said the Internet helped their kids in school, nearly three out of four acknowledged that they’ve had “issues” with their children’s online activities, including excessive exposure to advertising or commercialism online and exposure to coarse language, or sexual or violent content online.

Video shows hacker hit on power grid

A government video shows the potential destruction caused by hackers seizing control of a crucial part of the U.S. electrical grid: an industrial turbine spinning wildly out of control until it becomes a smoking hulk and power shuts down.

The electrical attack never actually happened. The recorded demonstration, called the “Aurora Generator Test,” was conducted in March by government researchers investigating a dangerous vulnerability in computers at U.S. utility companies known as supervisory control and data acquisition systems. The programming flaw was quietly fixed, and equipment-makers urged utilities to take protective measures.

There was no evidence any U.S. utility company suffered damage from hackers or terrorists using this technique, U.S. officials said. But these officials cautioned that affected systems are not routinely monitored as closely as many modern corporate computer networks, so there would be little forensic evidence to study after such a break-in.
