The online hangout MySpace got even more popular in November, beating Yahoo in Web traffic for the first time, a research company said Tuesday. News Corp.’s MySpace recorded 38.7 billion U.S. page views last month, compared with 38.1 billion for Yahoo, according to comScore Media Metrix. MySpace’s growth was 2 percent over October and triple the 12.5 billion recorded in November 2005. The numbers underscore the rapid rise of a social-networking site that encourages visitors to stay and make friends through free tools for messaging, sharing photos and creating personal pages known as profiles.

Research in Motion, makers of the popular BlackBerry messaging device, has sued Korean electronics giant Samsung over the name of its new BlackJack messaging device. The BlackJack device is sold in the United States by Cingular Wireless, and some say it superficially resembles the new BlackBerry Pearl. Cingular has been marketing the BlackJack aggressively, running a series of television and print commercials touting the device. Unlike previous lawsuits, RIM isn’t claiming patent infringement in regard to the BlackJack. Instead, the company claims that the name of the device is confusingly similar to the BlackBerry. RIM recently introduced the BlackBerry Pearl to go after the same consumer market that the BlackJack is courting.

More Americans than ever are staying connected to the office while away this holiday season, but not all are complaining about it, according to a survey released Dec. 12 that was commissioned by Lexmark. Surveyed “knowledge workers”–defined as individuals who use a computer at work for word processing, database, spreadsheet, Internet or email applications–say that they are more stressed at work than they were a few years ago, but they blame longer hours and not wireless technology. Though 61 percent of workers are committed to a 40-hour workweek, the majority said they work at least five hours more each week, with 10 percent reporting working an additional 20 hours weekly.

Shares of South Korean LCD panel maker LG.Philips LCD Co. Ltd. fell to historic lows on Tuesday as a probe into possible price-fixing by screen makers went global and spread to more firms. Japan’s Fair Trading Commission confirmed it was investigating price fixing claims against LG.Philips and rivals including Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Sharp Corp. of Japan. A joint venture between Japan’s Seiko Epson Corp. and Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd., which specializes in small liquid crystal display (LCD) screens for mobile phones and digital cameras, is part of the investigation. The European Union’s top competition regulator also said it was investigating possible cartel activities by producers of thin film transistor/LCDs.

The United States government is assigning a terror “risk assessment” score to every person, citizen or foreign national who crosses the border. The Department of Homeland Security plans to retain that score and information about your comings and goings for up to 40 years. But you have no way of learning what the score is. The system is supposed to flag suspicious people and cargo to make it easier for the Department of Homeland Security to stop criminals, terror suspects or dangerous materials at the border. Worst of all, the system doesn’t give citizens or their legal representatives the ability to check or challenge the accuracy of that information.
