HP quietly slipped out its first Windows Mobile 6 smartphone, the iPAQ 510 Voice Messenger, in June. What was unusual about this launch was the lack of an official announcement from the computer and printer giant. The version of the iPAQ 510 now available is an unlocked edition that can be used with the GMS operator of your choice. In the U.S., this would be either AT&T or T-Mobile.

Palm has quietly decided to let Verizon Treo 700p owners in on the updated version of VersaMail shipping with the new Treo 755p and the Sprint 700p ROM update. The main improvement found in VersaMail 3.5.4 over the earlier 3.5.1 and 3.5 versions is integrated support for Microsoft’s Exchange ActiveSync. Exchange ActiveSync enables Microsoft’s Direct Push email service on Palm OS Treo devices.

Microsoft downplayed Tuesday the impact of a new hack of its DRM technology, underlining the difficulties in erecting a long-lasting digital barrier against piracy. Doom9.org, a hacking forum, contained a post last Friday from “Divine Tao,” presumably the hacker responsible, with download links for the updated version of FairUse4WM. The program, which was released last August, strips the DRM technology that limits how Windows Media files can be used and prevents illegal file sharing.

Windows Media DRM is used, for example, on songs sold through online song retailer Napster. Songs purchased from there can’t copied to more than three computers, but there are no restrictions on how many times an individual song can be burned to a CD. Hacking activists argue they created FairUse4WM since they deserve broader freedom to move legitimately purchased content from device to device.
