Boingo takes to the air

Wi-Fi service provider Boingo Wireless has extended its coverage eight miles high by entering into a roaming pact with Connexion by Boeing, a subsidiary of the aircraft manufacturer that offers broadband connectivity to passengers aboard airplanes. The agreement will let Boingo subscribers wirelessly access the Internet while they’re on planes that offer the Connexion service.

Linux is the future

As competition intensifies in the market for smart phone OSes (operating systems), PalmSource is looking at ways to carve out a piece of market share. Earlier this month, the company acquired China MobileSoft (CMS) in a move aimed not only at gaining additional smart phone expertise but also Linux know-how. At the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, PalmSource unveiled four new applications that draw on its recent CMS acquisition. IDG News Service interviewed David Nagel, president and chief executive officer of PalmSource, shortly before the start of the wireless conference and exhibition.

Sony announced the introduction of the 2GB Memory Stick PRO Duo (High Speed) media, the largest capacity available in the Duo format. Sony is also introducing the 1GB Memory Stick PRO Duo media, which is easily recognizable by its bold new black coloring. The 1GB and 2GB Memory Stick PRO Duo media will be available in April for about $150 and $450, respectively.

Surge in smart phone sales

Smart phones will comprise 9.3 percent of mobile phones sold in 2009, compared to 3.7 percent in 2004, according to Jupiter Research. That translates into a compound annual growth rate of 28 percent through 2009, the market researcher said. But smart phones will not replace cell phones, media players, cameras or gaming devices.

Handset radiation within limits

A Finnish survey of some of the world’s most popular mobile phones found the amount of radiation they emit is well below agreed limits and largely in line with data published by manufacturers. The annual survey by Finland’s Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) covered 16 new models made by top handset makers including Finland’s Nokia, Motorola of the United States and South Korea’s Samsung Electronics.

School nixes electronic IDs

An elementary school in the rural town of Sutter, Calif., has pulled the plug on a new student surveillance system after the technology came under fire by parents and privacy groups. Brittan Elementary School, located about 40 miles north of state capital Sacramento, is shutting off the high-tech student-tracking system because the company supplying it backed out of the deal. InCom put a kibosh on the project after some parents and a representative of the American Civil Liberties Union aired complaints at a school board meeting last week.
