IT can wipe your phone

Just weeks after releasing its latest operating system for mobile devices, Windows Mobile 5.0, Microsoft has unveiled a security and messaging features update. Among the changes in the Messaging and Security Feature Pack for Windows Mobile 5.0 are faster access to the Outlook email client, the ability to wipe data on devices remotely, and certificate-based identity authentication.

Senforce Technologies announced a technology partner agreement that combines Senforce Endpoint Security Suite with iPass’ secure global connectivity service, iPass Corporate Access. The resulting solution enforces the use of the iPassConnect universal client for all remote connections. New version of Skweezer

Greenlight Wireless announced the release of a new version of its Skweezer portal, which optimizes Web pages, searches, and email for use on PDAs and cell phones. Skweezer is both a mobile-optimized browser and a fully functional Web portal, which includes an email client, contacts list, RSS reader, and other useful features. Laptops outsell desktops

In a sure sign that the era of mobile computing has arrived, notebooks have for the first time outsold desktops in the United States in a calendar month, the research firm Current Analysis says. After tracking sales from a sampling of electronics retailers, Current Analysis says notebook sales accounted for 53 percent of the total personal computer market last month, up from 46 percent during the same period last year.

HP adds iPod Minis

Hewlett-Packard announced the addition of Apple Computer’s iPod Mini to its line of digital music players. The company said it will offer two models of the iPod Mini–a 4GB version designed to store up to 1,000 songs and a 6GB version that will hold 1,500 songs. Both players feature a touch-sensitive click wheel, battery life of up to 18 hours and USB charging.

Intel’s next notebook chip

Yonah, a notebook chip coming from Intel in the first part of next year, is going to be a lot different than its predecessors, company executives say. The chip, which will be made on the 65-nanometer process, will come with a number of enhancements over the current Pentium M line of notebook chips, Mooly Eden, vice president of the mobility group, said at a briefing. For one thing, it will contain two cores, instead of the single core on current notebook chips. The two separate cores will also share a 2MB cache. Current dual-core desktop chips from Advanced Micro Devices and Intel come with similar sized caches, but each core accesses only 1MB of cache memory dedicated to it. Sharing the cache will significantly boost performance.
