In the June 2002 issue of PalmPower I wrote an article entitled, "Create healthy daily habits and keep them on your Palm handheld" at http://www.palmpower.com/issues/issue200206/habit001.html. Over the past couple of months, I’ve received a number of interesting responses from readers. I thought it would be fun to share some of them with you here so you might benefit from their stories, as well.

It was interesting to read your article in Palm Power Magazine concerning the use of the Palm handheld for setting good habits for the week.

I have had an interest in holistic health, and your idea of using a spreadsheet was very helpful. I used Documents To Go (at http://www.dataviz.com) on my Palm IIIxe and use the Sheet To Go format. I believe your suggestion about focusing on healthy habits works better than trying to concentrate on eliminating bad habits. My categories center on the whole person. I have tried to envision for myself what my ideal day would look like, although I realize that I can’t do everything each day. The system of using a spreadsheet enables me to look at the week at a glance and evaluate how I have done.

As a minister, I have had an interest in the use of technology for ministry. I have been working on the use of the Palm organizer as a pastor’s companion, noting how it can be used in ministry.

Recently I received a Palm m515 for Father’s Day. I’m a life long exerciser, but I must continuously fight back my weight. I’m going to be 56 next month, and I consider myself to be in excellent health. I want to stay that way, and I’m going to give your solution a try. I’ll keep you posted.

Toward the end of your article you mention that, "Figure D also shows that I’ve been a good girl and have taken my vitamins every day."

Looking at "Figure D," the daily intake of vitamins you say you recorded as having taken does not appear anywhere in the example.

.H1 BlueMoon tracks
Thanks very much for your article on tracking daily habits.

You might be interested in a software product called BlueMoon that integrates with the To Do application and tracks habits (or other things) and will give you a statistical analysis on how frequently you have done each thing. If you turn on the option to synchronize with the To Do application, you can check off the activity in the To Do application, and BlueMoon will both record the activity and add the next occurrence of the to-do item to the To Do database. BlueMoon can work with any To Do application replacement, such as ToDo PLUS (at http://handshigh.com), DateBk5 (at http://www.pimlicosoftware.com/datebk5.htm), Action Names (at http://www.iambic.com), etc.

The following letter was actually written in response to an old article of mine called, "Keep in shape with Vivonic’s Fitness Planner," in the September 2000 issue of PalmPower at http://www.palmpower.com/issues/issue200009/vivonic001.html, but since it involves exercise and that’s often a daily habit, I decided to include it here.

I am considering some fitness software and was reading your review of Vivonic’s Fitness Planner (at http://www.vivonic.com). I would like to ask you a few questions.

Your article was published in September of 2000. Are you still using it? Do you still like it? Has it improved in the last two years? Would you still recommend it?

There seem to be a couple competitors that look good, too. Have you looked at BalanceLog (at http://www.healthetech.com/corp/consumer/balancelog.jsp) or Diet & Exercise Assistant (at http://www.keyoe.com/DEA_Handheld.htm)?

To be totally honest, I am not using Vivonic’s Fitness Planner any longer. It was great to use in order to begin to get myself in shape and eating better. Almost two years later, I’m still eating healthy and am in shape. I don’t need to rely on tools such as Vivonic to keep track of what I’m doing and how I’m doing it. It’s basically become second nature.

I would still recommend using Vivonic’s Fitness Planner to get you started. It was very user-friendly. I don’t know how much the software changed since I wrote the article.

I’m not too familiar with the other programs you mentioned. However, Heather Wardell reviewed BalanceLog in her article, "Lose those winter pounds with BalanceLog," in the May 2002 issue of PalmPower at http://www.palmpower.com/issues/issue200205/balancelog001.html.

Another option is to download demo versions of the programs, try each of them out for a few days, and decide which program best fits your needs.
