.SUMMARY On the road to success, we all meet with the occasional setbacks. When those times come, we often need a motivational boost to get us back on track. Steve Niles reviews The Personal Success Pocketbook by Paul Hayden, a great ebook resource you can use to jumpstart your self-confidence and achieve your dreams.
.AUTHOR Steve Niles
In 1905 Albert Einstein received a doctorate from the University of Zurich for a theoretical dissertation on the dimensions of molecules. He also published three theoretical papers that proved instrumental to the development of modern physics. Among these papers, Einstein proposed the special theory of relativity. This is, of course, just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the staggering work Einstein managed to achieve in his lifetime. Few probably would have guessed such great things would come from a boy who didn’t speak until he was four years old or read until he was seven. In fact, the Zurich Polytechnic refused to admit Einstein because he "showed no promise."

Albert Einstein is just one of the examples Paul Hayden gives of individuals who overcame great odds to reach fantastic goals in The Personal Success Pocketbook from Pocketmanager.com at http://www.pocketmanager.com/product.jsp?product_id=-536011967. The Personal Success Pocketbook is yet another valuable ebook you can keep close at hand on your Palm handheld computer.

.H1 The success cycle
The Personal Success Pocketbook is designed to be used as a workbook and reference book. Hayden provides a series of exercises you can work through that will help you to define what success means to you. Then, once you know what it is you need to do to feel successful, Hayden guides you through the steps you need to follow in order to achieve success. He’ll take you through the success cycle of planning, taking action, receiving feedback, and learning from the feedback.

Above and beyond these tangible exercises, however, Hayden’s words, along with a liberal selection of inspirational quotes from a variety of philosophical thinkers ranging from Ralph Waldo Emerson to Wayne Gretzky, serve to act as a call to action, a much needed kick in the pants, designed to jump start your flagging psyche. As Johnny Bench is quoted as saying, "Slumps are like a soft bed. They’re easy to get into and hard to get out of."

Having The Personal Success Pocketbook stored on your Palm device is like having a motivational speaker in your pocket. Any time you’re feeling as though you aren’t living up to your fullest potential, you can refer to Hayden’s powerful ebook for the inspiration you need to set goals, take risks, and steer your wagon towards the stars.

.H1 Chapter by chapter
In chapter one, "Planning," Hayden explains that your definition of success will naturally be different from the definitions of others. You have to undertake a process of self-discovery to determine just what your definition of success is. The first step in this process is answering the question, "Where am I now?" As Hayden says, "With a clearer idea of where you are now, you can start defining where you want to be." Once your idea of success is defined, you can begin to assess the risks involved in pursuing it and your commitment to the task. Finally, you need to set goals, and these goals must be measurable.

Chapter two, "Taking Action," begins you on your way towards achieving your goals. The key thing here is harnessing the ability to manage change. You have to learn to manage change, or, as an Indonesian ninja master once told me, change will manage you. Hayden will guide you through the "Change Cycle" and show you ways to reduce your resistance to change. He’ll also provide you with tactics for implementing change.

In chapter three, "Receiving Feedback," you’ll learn whether the action you took actually worked and whether or not you achieved your definition of success. Hayden points out, however, "it is unlikely you will succeed on your first attempt." When you fail to succeed, there are a variety of emotions you might experience, but of all the possibilities, anger, says Hayden, is the worst, as it’s self-destructive. When we receive negative feedback, it only spells failure if that’s what we’re willing to accept. According to Hayden, "Failure is a reaction, not an outcome. It is your reaction to feedback that will determine your success or failure."

Chapter four, "Learning from the Feedback," will show you what to do when things do go wrong. You can learn just as much from your failures as you can from your successes.

Chapter five, "Persistence," provides excellent inspiration for anyone prone to quitting after a failed attempt to achieve success. Here, Hayden once again turns to real life stories of famous folks who persevered in the face of failure. For example, he cites James Dyson, who finally succeeded in inventing the world’s first bag-less vacuum cleaner after five years and 5,127 prototypes, a process that nearly bankrupted him. Hayden notes, Dyson is now on his way to becoming Britain’s first billionaire inventor.

In chapter six, Hayden provides a "Success Toolkit" that provides a number of techniques to help you move towards your goals and your personal definition of success. Some of the tools include time management, focus, belief systems, and affirmations.

Paul Hayden’s The Personal Success Pocketbook is an ideal ebook for anyone attempting to make it in the corporate world. With Hayden’s collection of wit and wisdom stored conveniently on your Palm computer, you’ll have the motivation you need to journey on your way to success.
