The school year has come to a close, you might be looking for a fun graduation gift for someone in your life. If that’s the case, Palm has you in mind this spring. In case you haven’t already heard, Palm has put together a special deal in which, if you purchase a Palm m130 handheld, a Palm m500 handheld, or a Palm m505 handheld, you get a free expansion card designed for graduates titled "Shortcuts to Success" that features productivity tools, games, and Charles Webb’s novel The Graduate in ebook format. This promotion follows on the heels of the release of the Palm m125 Grad Pack, which included a Palm m125 handheld, a USB HotSync cable, and the Shortcuts to Success expansion card. This is a limited edition bundle, so there may not be many more available. You can find them in the U.S. at Best Buy stores across the country, Follet college campus bookstores, and Staples stores in the northeast.
Handango (at http://www.handango.com) has long been putting out solution suites that combine a Palm handheld with specially selected software tailored to particular vertical markets. The Palm m125 Grad Pack marks the first time Palm has bundled customized content and included it with a handheld in a bundle created for a specific audience. It’s a new type of promotion for Palm. It’s also a new type of packaging. The Grad Pack is marketed in a clear clamshell package designed to make it easier for customers to see everything they’re getting, as well as making it easier for retailers to display Palm handhelds in multiple locations throughout their stores.

The Shortcuts for Success expansion card can be used in any Palm handheld that features the Palm Expansion Slot. It includes the following applications.

Palm Reader is the official ebook reader sanctioned by Palm, Inc. Palm bought the technology from Peanut Press and now offers a large line of ebooks via Palm Digital Media at http://www.palmdigitalmedia.com. This copy of Palm Reader comes with a free ebook edition of Charles Webb’s 1963 novel, The Graduate, which was, of course, turned into the hit film starring Dustin Hoffman and recently adapted into a stage production starring Kathleen Turner and Jason Biggs, as shown in Figure A.

FCPlus Professional by Infinity Softworks (at http://www.infinitysw.com) turns your Palm handheld into a powerful financial calculator. Anyone leaving the relative ease of student life to face the burdens of balancing a budget in the real world will find this software useful.

CityTime by Code City is a world time application at http://www.codecity.com.au/prodctpalm.html. Backpacking around Europe after graduation? This little piece of software could come in handy as you cross from one time zone to another. It’s pictured in Figure B.

SimCity by Atelier (at http://www.ateliersoftware.com/palm/index.php3) is a system simulation game in which you get to build and control entire cities. This is a great way to feed your God complex before embarking on your own professional or political career. SimCity for Palm OS is pictured in Figure C.

.H2 Astraware games
The Shortcuts for Success expansion card comes with two other diversions. Both games are from Astraware. The first is Zap!2016 (at http://www.astraware.com/palm/zap2000/). Blow away the bad guys with this arcade action game for the Palm OS. The game features accurate handling weapons, power-ups, over 50 different aliens, seven deadly boss enemies, seven levels with scrolling backgrounds, high-quality full-screen graphics, and comes in both color and grayscale versions. It’s pictured in Figure D.

The second Astraware game is Bejeweled! (at http://www.astraware.com/palm/bejeweled/). The object is to tap adjacent pairs of gems to swap them and make matching horizontal and vertical lines of three or more. It’s pictured in Figure E.

Finally, a trial version of 4.0Student by Handmark (at http://www.handmark.com/products/40student/) is included for those high school graduates moving on to college. This software offers coursework management, class information, and grade tracking. It’s pictured in Figure F.

You can use 4.0Student to keep class details, such as instructor information, textbooks, grading policies, and detailed course information like class time, location, instructor office hours, phone, and email. The coursework management functionality lets you track homework, quiz, and test details including due dates, scores, textbooks, and even a note for the coursework details.

You can also keep tabs on your own performance. The 4.0Student grade tracking functionality provides visibility to class grades as well as overall GPA. You can even perform "what if" scenarios to predict your final grade for a class by entering grade predictions on upcoming coursework.
