The latest high-end smartphone from HTC has reached store shelves for only about a week, but early feedback in the developer's home market Taiwan points to a coming sales boom after a string of failures. Customers often partial toward Samsung smartphones are lining up to fiddle with the 5-inch HTC One (M8) handset that stands out for its dual camera lens, photo editing software and speakers both above and below the screen. Some sellers in Taipei's premier electronics mall had already sold out of the NT$21,900 (US$725) device by Saturday and had to call for resupplies.

The company that has slid in world market share since early 2011 has been looking for this kind of reaction to its One series high-end smartphones. It's gotten attention in Taiwan first off by using top-of-the-line hardware as well as software, one Taipei vendor says. Hardware in the HTC One Max phablet, by comparison, missed a key component, one analyst found. Photos that allow focusing on parts of bigger images and editing even in 3D add to the M8's attraction. Video viewers equipped with the two "BoomSound" speakers won't have to glue an ear to the phone. The metal case that doesn't disrupt signals but expels heat, ideal for processing speed, is another selling point. The M8 exceeds similarly priced contemporaries Samsung Galaxy S5 and Sony Xperia Z2 in number of shopper inquiries, local vendors say. The same devices are selling in UK and US stores, as well.

More strategically, HTC learned from last year's mistakes by ensuring it had enough camera parts and assembly workers, says independent Taipei smartphone analyst Wilson Miao. It also got the marketing right, he says, by explaining clearly in advertisements the features of the M8 camera. HTC began marketing reforms in mid-2013 after retooling its budget and hiring comeback icon Robert Downey Jr. to help with ads. "The product doesn't have too many problems, and the marketing was done right," Miao says. "They needed to really pay attention to its supply chain, which they did," he adds.

HTC One (M8) on display in Taipei, April 5

Read also:

High end HTC smartphone shows up on AnTuTu, could be Butterfly 2 or One Max (Techivian)

Explore: 17 additional articles.
