Roomba’s laser-guided competitor just got a major overhaul. Neato Robotics has sensibly renamed its robotic vacuum cleaner the BotVac, and boosted its key features to better clean the floors of those willing to drop $500.
The BotVac sets itself apart from iRobot’s famous Roomba with a laser mapping technology that scans the room and maps out its plan before starting to vacuum. Optical sensors help it avoid obstacles. The Roomba also has sensors so it won’t run into things or fall off stairs, but it uses a specially designed path, rather than a view of the room, to ensure it covers the whole floor.
Neato’s new models have a wider brush oriented towards the right hand side of the low-riding machine, so that (at least on the one side) it can clean within 10 millimeters of the wall. The new models also include a side brush to pick up dust in that last little gap.
The new BotVacs also have a longer battery life that offer up to an hour of cleaning without a recharge and a larger 0.6-liter container for collected dust. The four models of BotVac will range from $480 to $600 depending on brush and filter options chosen, but all will work on hardwood floors and carpets.
