Apple on Monday at the Geneva International Motor Show launched CarPlay, the company’s iPhone-related foray into the automotive industry. Previously known as iOS in the Car, the new CarPlay functionality is already available in select Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo models, with several other carmakers planning to offer it to their customers in the future, including BMW Group, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai Motor Company, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia Motors, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan Motor Company, PSA Peugeot Citroen, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota Motor Corp.
With the Apple TV having graduated from a “hobby” to a billion-dollar product in 2013, it was time for Apple to look elsewhere for a pet project. But with all the deals Apple already has lined up, CarPlay might not be a “hobby” for very long.
CarPlay is described as “the smarter, safer and more fun way” to use the iPhone features in the car. CarPlay will offer users support for calls, messages, navigation and music, which can be controlled directly from the car’s interface, and accessed via a “word or a touch.” A button on the steering wheel will activate Siri to assist with commands while driving.
“Once iPhone is connected to a vehicle with CarPlay integration, Siri helps you easily access your contacts, make calls, return missed calls or listen to voicemails,” Apple said. “When incoming messages or notifications arrive, Siri provides an eyes-free experience by responding to requests through voice commands, by reading drivers’ messages and letting them dictate responses or simply make a call.”
