JUPITER, Fla. For the third time already this spring, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny today urged his players to be vigilant and conscientious on social media because one misstep is “one fraction of a second” away from going global.
This time he had a readily available example for his meeting with players in the major-league camp.
On Monday afternoon, pitcher Carlos Martinez’s page of “favorite” tweets on Twitter a publicly available page went viral because it contained dozens of pornographic photos and links. A link to the page, which could be seen by anyone online, sped through Twitter and was picked up later by Deadspin.com. A video on that site offered a tour of the adult pictures Martinez had collected by clicking “favorite” on the social media site’s stream of tweets.
The Cardinals were unable to reach Martinez until Monday evening, at which time they helped him remove the images from his Twitter page.
