Most of us know as Foursquare as a social media tool that allows you to "check-in" wherever you are, but I realized that there are quite a few people who don't quite know how to tap into the benefits of Foursquare during their travels.

Foursquare is a free app that you can download through the App Store. As of January, 2014, over 45 million people around the world use this app and so far the app has recorded over 5 billion check-ins. The beauty of Foursquare is that it can become a personalized travel guide. When you check-in to your location, the app will provide you with personalized recommendations and nearby deals. I've received free appetizers, 20% off discounts and even a free meal by checking in at a business or establishment. Those deals are flagged beforehand so you can spot whether or not there are any before you check-in.

You can also see notes and photos taken at that particular location. Those can include tips on what to order (if it's a restaurant), a must-do or must-see (if it's a city) or tips about the hotel you're staying at. These are all provided by people who have visited that particular location, so the tips are usually quite helpful. It's always fun to check-in to a location which your friend has already been to and read their tips!

Not everyone wants their location broadcasted, which is why the privacy option is so great. In order for your friends to see your check-ins, you must first approve them as a friend. The only people who can see your check-ins are you and your friends, so you don't have to worry about someone looking up your current location.
