Uniquely, the Jolla runs the open source OS Sailfish, which is based on Linux and was developed in part by the Finnish company. The software uses Android device drivers and is therefore capable of running on a wide range of existing hardware and can also run the hundreds of thousands of apps written for Google's OS.

No details of what the Jolla will sell for in the UK have been released, but the company estimates a 399 price on the continent and says it will announce a list of supported countries and operators in coming days. It claims to have pre-orders from 130 countries.

"We've created a world-class platform. Users will be getting more choice," Jolla co-founder Marc Dillon told the BBC.

The company was founded by engineers who had previously been working on an operating system called MeeGo for Nokia. That project was dropped in favour of Microsoft's Windows OS in 2011. The engineers left to continue developing what would eventually become Sailfish and also produce their own handset. It now has around 90 staff and offices in Finland and Hong Kong.

Read also:

Ex-Nokia engineers launch new Jolla smartphone (Sydney Morning Herald)

Jolla smartphone sets sail, tries to be different (Android Community)

Jolla's Sailfish OS-running smartphone out now for 399 (Tech2)

Explore: 134 additional articles.
