Shares in BlackBerry Ltd. slumped Friday, a day after news broke of a potential takeover bid by co-founders Mike Lazaridis and Douglas Fregin. But at least one observer believes the plan can succeed.
California-based tech analyst Rob Enderle said investors favour buyout overtures from former leaders of a company since they have “skin in the game.” He added that the pair would have at least $100 million of personal wealth to contribute to the deal.
“Other investors would be looking for how much they are putting in out of their own pocket” although they would also need to be convinced that Lazaridis has a strategy that can turn BlackBerry around, Enderle said.
In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission this week, former childhood friends Lazaridis and Fregin said they are considering a joint bid “with the goal of stabilizing and ultimately reinventing” the company based on an undisclosed plan.
