ROCKY RIVER, Ohio — About 70 girls from private and public schools across the area spent Saturday at Magnificat High School putting their problem-solving skills to the test. Magnificat partnered with the Great Lakes Science Center and LEGO for Magnifibot 2.0, a robotics day for girls in grades five through eight.
Girls like Jossi Meaux and Ava Ernst, both fifth-graders at Bay Middle School, learned how to design, build and program robots. As teammates, Jossi and Ava worked together to solve the problem when their robot wasn’t performing up to par. Both girls said they liked the challenges posed by the robotics day.
Magnificat teacher Lori Koss, who chairs the high school’s science department, said one of the best things about the event is “the energy of these young minds.” She said the message she hopes the girls get is “you can do anything” and that STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers are wide open for women.
