The latest edition of the Guinness Book of World Records has confirmed the world’s largest walking robot. That robot is a 51-foot, 11 ton, radio-controlled dragon that, of course, also breathes fire.
The dragon was designed and built by German company Zollner Elektronik AG. The dragon’s full dimensions are 5.50 m x 3.80 m x 4.50 m. It’s powered by a 2.0-liter Diesel engine with about 140 horsepower. The dragon also has wings that span 12 meters and is filled with 80 liters of stage blood.
It took a long time to get there. The project began in February of 2007, with a research team of 15 people. The entire system was first laid out completely electronically, no tinkering, in order to prove the concept. Once the concept design was settled, the research team began building the dragon.
The dragon itself has both hydraulic and electronic components, and has nine separate controllers, each containing two TI processors and a Fujitsu Fujitsu microcontroller. It has 238 separate sensors for determining the environment around it. It fully walks with all four legs, each of which has 7 degrees of freedom, which leads to a pretty lifelike gait.
