Berlin has been the place to be for new HDTVs this week. Major electronics companies all unveiled their biggest and most high-tech displays, and while IFA didn't have many details on their North American release dates, they could show up on our doorstep in the next few months.

Sony's offerings include one possible technical revolution, more affordable choices in 4K HDTVs, and a new head-mounted display for virtual reality gaming. Sony announced a 65-inch HDTV it claims is the first curved LED (non-OLED) screen ever released. Its curved screen and two arrays of speakers angled at different directions can provide a more immersive viewing experience, especially with the speakers offering both front and surround channels thanks to their placement.

In the ultra-high-definition scene, Sony unveiled two speaker-less versions of the X900A 4K screens it announced earlier this year. The new X850 screens are each $500 less expensive than their X900 counterparts, even after the X900 models themselves got $500 discounts this week. All four 4K HDTVs will work with Sony's XEL-1 4K media server, which just got access to the company's new Video Unlimited 4K service. While no physical media for 4K movies has been released, users will be able to download native 4K filmes from Video Unlimited 4K.

Finally, Sony refreshed its head-mounted display series with the HMZ-T3W, a one-person theater/virtual reality headset and an upgraded version of the HMZ-T2 and HMZ-T1 headsets. The T3W is now wireless, completely cutting the cables between the headset and its source box, making it much comfortable to wear. It features two 720p OLED panels and displays a picture equivalent to seeing a 750-inch theater screen from 20 meters away. The headset's battery can last up to three hours when viewing a WirelessHD or MHL-HDMI source, or up to seven hours when viewing an HDMI source. Sony notes that the headset is designed for gaming, and that it will have a fast response time and one-touch contrast boost, making it a possible companion to the upcoming PlayStation 4.

Read also:

OK, forget the 3D telly fiasco: 4K is gonna blow you away - say tech giants (Register)

Explore: 3 additional articles.
