This week Asus announced a new 10.1-inch touchscreen ultraportable laptop the company plans to start offering their budge shoppers later this year. The netbook-sized Asus X102BA laptop will be launching shortly with Windows 8, a 10.1-inch HD (1366 x 768) multi-touch capacitive screen, and a power-efficient AMD dual-core Temash APU.
Announced earlier this year the AMD Temash family of accelerated processing units (APUs) are ultra low voltage processing chips that compete with Intel’s lower TDP Celeron/Pentium/Core i processors. AMD presented the Temash line as their first mobile ready APUs, perfect for slim touchscreen Windows 8 computers such as tablets. The main design feature for the Temash line is its power efficiency which helps slimmer computers achieve great computing performance without sacrificing battery life.
The AMD Temash APUs feature a standard power draw or TDP that ranges from 3.9W up to just 8W. The 8W TDP chips offer either faster CPU clock speeds or GPU clock speeds than the 3.9W TDP APUs. For this new ASUS laptop you should expect to see the 3.9W TDP model which is named AMD A4-1200 dual-core APU, and that chip features a CPU clock speed of 1.0GHz and it’s AMD Radeon HD 8180 on-chip graphics chip is clocked at 225MHz.
Although the A4-1200 APU is the lowest-end Temash APU Asus and AMD promise the dual-core chip will be able to multi-task and the Radeon HD 8180 graphics will provide HD entertainment. While all of that is possible the X102BA will also be able to offer, two-second resume from sleep time, over two weeks a standby time and automatic data backup in sleep mode when the battery level drops below 5%, according to Asus.
