Robot Unicorn Attack 2 improves upon almost every aspect of the original. The concept has been expanded far beyond its initial tongue-in-cheek roots, and those changes serve to make it come together as a better cohesive whole. The absurdist humor that captured so much attention the first time around feels less fresh, but this sequel is a much better actual game.

Like the first game, RUA2 is an endless runner in which a robotic unicorn must jump across platforms and crash through star barriers. The first game had finely-tuned jumping, and in that light, very little has changed about the core experience. This one feels almost identical to the original, save the addition of enemies that force the player to think fast. While star barriers were always passive, these new giants actually fire before you reach them, making for a much more aggressive obstacle that demands more of the player.

The most immediately noticeable improvement is the significant visual upgrade, full of lush backgrounds and more texture and visual depth to the characters. Oh, also flying whales. The bright, pastel-soaked style benefits particularly from the iPad screen, as opposed to the smaller iPhone or iPad.

A set of upgrades allow you to customize your unicorn, and I was glad to find they're much more than mere cosmetic flourishes. A pair of wings, for example, allowed me to fly once my unicorn reached its top speed. This created an entirely different dynamic for navigation that took some adjustment, but allowed more greater freedom of movement at the sacrifice of some precision. Other upgrades allow faster movement, longer or shorter dashes, and so on.
