
Supporters of the deal hope the free WiFi will help bridge digital divide between rich and poor in the area.
The digital divide just got a lot smaller in Chelsea and the meatpacking district, at least.
Google announced Tuesday it will create the Big Apple’s largest contiguous free wireless Internet zone, a smartphone friendly region bounded by W. 19th St., Gansevoort St., Eighth Ave. and the High Line Park. It includes some of the ritziest real estate in the city, plus the Fulton Houses, a public housing project.
“There’s this stigma about people living in public housing, that we’re not smart enough to use technology but this says Google doesn’t think that’s true,” said Miguel Acevedo, who runs youth programs in the Housing Authority development. “They know this is vital for us as a community and to help our people grow with the times.”
