The University of Northern Iowa Robotics team travelled to Nashville, Tenn., on Nov. 14 in order to participate in the 2012 Association of Technology, Management and Applied Engineering (ATMAE) competition. UNI’s team faced off with several schools from across the country with their robot P-CAT ll.
P-CAT, which stands for Panther Collect Analyze and Transfer, was the winning robot the team built for the 2011 competition and then modified for this year’s challenge.
P-CAT ll’s functions are to collect 36 ping pong balls, grouped in four different colors, from a small table, sort them and then dispense them into a specified container. This must all be done within the seven-minute time frame provided during competition.
This year, the P-CAT ll earned third place overall, finishing behind the second-place team by only one point. The team acquired second place in the task objective section of the challenge. With an overall gap of only 12 points between the first and third place, this year’s competition was much closer than in years past.
